Be 30 yards longer
Be 30 yards longer
We all wish to be longer off the tee to get us nearer the green and score better.
We try to perfect swinging a 1.2 metre stick at 160 kms per hour and expect the sweet spot of 20mm to connect perfectly to an area on the ball smaller than a 1 cent coin to launch the drive straight down the middle of the fairway every time.
This is something that a professional only achieves 60% of the time.
If the angle of impact is only 1% off or if you are 2mm off the sweet spot, it can put the direction of travel off by 12 metres or 20 yards in the old days.
Anyway now that you know that it is easy, here's how Padraig Harrington added 30 yards to his drive in recent tests.
The answer is the Happy Gilmore method. Yes he ran up to the ball at 6KMS per hour. The run up and extra body turn produced an increase in club head speed. The result was an average 30 yards extra. Amazingly his position at impact was identical to his position when static. Accuracy went out the window. So you could be a further 30 yards out of bounds just as easy.
There is nothing in the rules to say that you cannot hit a ball when running and in a country that has a sport played at high speed doing exactly this, maybe we have an advantage. So get practising.
Happy days, Happy Gilmore.
