Christy O Connor member and 5 Handicapper Philip Hyland set a new course record on July 7th in Howth Golf Club.
Anyone who has played on Howth knows what the wind blows like even on a good day. It was blowing a gale on Tuesday. Course experts were confidently predicting that 5 or 6 over par would win the gross.

However the old course record of 68 got a hammering. The golf course has even been lengthened since that figure was set. Philip went out in 33 which is 2 under par and returned in 32, 4 under for the back nine. In all, he had 8 birdies and 2 bogies.

When asked about his round he stated that he didn't do anything all that special tee-to-green. I drove the ball quite well and my iron play was rather average but it was really on and around the greens that I made my score. Chipping and putting was what it was all about. The greens were incredibly good. They were a nice pace and very true, and I just got the pace of them straight away. I held a lot of putts from 15 feet and inside and that was really it.

Philip was a juvenile member in Howth so had some prior knowledge however this was still a superb round of golf. Congratulations to Philip on his display.
